This landscape bleak

This landscape bleak:
stunted trees scrubbing
low hillsides, or clustering
in small groves in gentle
service to shade
each other. Clutches
of prickly pear boldface
the grass golden in autumn
splendor, covering rocks
and stones dropped by giants,
or less. All fenced by wire
not to keep intruders out
but to keep the cattle in.
Except for the fences
it might be the road

to Bethlehem.
